Watch Me Fly
was a multi-layered, mixed media project. Twenty-six high school students participated, representing area high schools in Morris County, NJ.
All the works in the exhibition were created by the students in conjunction with two workshops held in October 2005 that I led at the Morris Museum. Students first viewed Faith Ringgold’s works in the exhibition Anyone Can Fly: Faith Ringgold – A Survey (on view at the museum) and learned about her themes and media.
Students were then asked to achieve 3 goals: to explore what the theme Watch Me Fly meant to them, to work in mixed media, and to create works that participated in a visual dialogue with Ringgold’s imagery. The student exhibition Watch Me Fly was a wonderful success and the students truly soared. I took the images (seen nearby) of students at the workshops and the reception.
