Collage classes at the Pelham Art Center

7 adult students are enrolled in my collage class this spring at the Pelham Art Center (4/12 – 6/14 2021). COVID safety protocols are in place so everyone signs in, wears a mask and is seated a safe distance from each other. Class size is limited to 8 and lasts 2 hours. The class is open to students at all skill levels, and everyone says it’s great to be part of the group experience and share learning and creativity.

Students love that I create collage projects for each class, and that some projects are inspired by important collage artists like Romare Bearden and Henri Matisse that adds an art historical element to class projects. The most important lesson is learning to see – so students observe and comment about colors, shapes and design. Every class includes demonstration, discussion and personal feedback.

The image above is titled Split Personality. It’s a collage I created with various papers and wood on panel. I will bring sample collages to classes to share information on the media and techniques I use. Some classes include demonstration and discussion for creating collage media with paints and drawing. Students are encouraged to work on independent projects (in addition to class projects) and to work with personal media, including photos, letters, fabric, small objects, etc.
